Honour your goals

Small actions will compound over time, failure is fine. The struggle breeds character, can you adapt to the uncertain terrain that is presented to you in the moment of battle. Winning or losing is not the key driver but to be able to iterate a design that is crafted by experience and time.

The first construction lines on a drawing, allows you to setup a blueprint. As the draftsman formulates a visual strategy to compose a diagram, the factor of time allows research to compile data, each draft is then submitted to a Master Architect or Engineer. In the case of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu a Professor.

The elders of experience can make us see gaps in our craft, the Architect can see the details that need to be refined with new solutions to create a space that is tangible. The Engineer can sign off the schematics of MEP (Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing) that overlay the space to function effectively for the end user or client.

A Professor of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the head of the practice, he or she can unlock the spatial awareness that the white belt/draftsman needs. The foundation that is set must be within movements, the concrete component for a white belt is character. We can all start of as unrefined raw material but like great Architecture will we stand the test of time?

Discipline become a habit with correct instruction, practice is where we learn, we need a feedback cycle, in order to uphold the ideals of the house style. It could be sheer force of pressure passing in a Gi (IBJJF Style) or the elusive and sneaky ashi garami game in Nogi (Submission Only).

But with Kuzushi (meaning Off balance) can you sustain structural integrity against the adversity of your opponent. Now can you honour your goals under pressure and surprise?
